Another vintage secretary desk in the books! These pieces of furniture are one of my favorite styles, but also one of the most challenging and time consuming. You may see only one piece here, but we took it apart into 18 pieces and treated each as it’s own. By doing this, we ensure the finish it even and uniform throughout and are able to identify and fix every repair it needs.

This one was painted using General Finishes Coastal Blue Poly & Seagull Gray Milk Paint, and then sealed in GF High Performance in the sheen I like to call Flat-in, a 50/50 mix of Flat & Satin. The drawers were lined in pretty lily pad wallpaper from Target and adorned with new brass ring pulls.

Check out another recent makeover of our customers 25 year old dining set! This set has sentimental value to my customer, since all of her children grew up around this table. They asked to have to restored back to its original condition so that one day the children can inherit it.

It’s back is it’s home and looking good as new!

Another secretary desk in the books! 🥳 Three years ago, my client fell in love with the first black and white secretary we painted, and knew she wanted to have hers painted the same.

We used General Finishes Black and Antique White Poly for this look, and updated the original batwing drawer pulls with more modern ring pulls from Home Depot.

You can never go wrong with a light and bright finish am I right?! This 84” TV console is made from solid cherry and was in great condition but no longer fit our customers light and neutral colored home. She had us update it in a custom finish to match another piece of furniture she ordered.

It may look solid white in the pictures, but it has a light dry brushing technique over the entire surface, inside and out. This project took us quite a while due to its size, weight, and finish, but it’s back home and looking great!

Happy Tuesday everyone!

It’s no secret that navy & gold is one of my favorite combos, so you know I was excited when my customer chose those colors for her heirloom china cabinet. This special piece has been in her husbands family and they love it, but the dated orange finish didn’t complement their beautifully decorated home.

One thing that was important to my customer, is that we showed off some of the wood and stain it in a less orange, more brown finish.

We decided to paint the body, and then refinish the top and interior hutch in a custom mixed stain using @generalfinishes Java & Black gel stains. The body was painted in my favorite navy, Coastal Blue, and sealed in a satin topcoat for that lovely sheen.

Thank you again Lisa and family for having me work on your furniture!

My signature Rustic Barley finish is looking oh so good on this dining table base paired with a custom stained top in the same tone!

If you’re like me, which I know many of my painter friends are, we tend to say yes to client requests even when they’re going to be very tricky or maybe impossible. We love something about overcoming a challenge, am I right?!

For this particular table, my customer wanted a light all wood finish instead of the dark red one it had (see last photo). You see, this was problematic because the table top was veneered, which would make removing the red stain difficult, and the skirt wasn’t all wood, so I couldn’t refinish it. Instead I proposed another option, using a slightly lighter version of my signature wood toned painted finish for the base, and pairing that with a custom stain on the top that would complement it so closely that from afar, it would look almost the same. Giving her that “all wood” look. It took days to remove the old stain out of the grain and we hit it with every wood treatment we could. In the end, it all came together perfectly!

Can’t wait to do this combo again!

Oh Coastal Blue, how I love you! 💙How stunning is this navy paired with the dark custom stain and fabric lined drawer?! 😍😍I love how this baby turned out and can’t wait to show all of her off!

Stillwater Blue how I love you! 😍

Although this set isn’t antique or vintage, it is very special to my client as it was her late fathers. It had been well loved and had lots of wear and tear that comes with that. My customers chose this bright and cheery blue to complement their new dining space makeover, complete with built in bench seating and some really amazing floral wallpaper! We love how this turned out!

While I love neutrals, I believe every home should have at least one pop of color!

This vintage chest of drawers received a bold update this week and will be heading down to its new home in North Carolina.

Who else loves a pop of color in their home?!

Just wrapped up our last custom project of the year, and man was it massive! This 20 year old Restoration Hardware table had seen its share of wear and tear, and received a much needed update just in time for Christmas dinner!

We stripped and stained it in a custom mixed brown/gray stain and sealed it in my favorite General Finishes topcoats for durability. Now it’s ready to be enjoyed again for many more years to come!

Merry Christmas everyone! 🎄🎅🏼🎉

🌟MAKEOVER TIME!🌟

Some of you may have already seen this makeover on my IG stories, but I wanted to make them FB official!

My client asked us to update her husbands first set of furniture that he purchased years ago, and was sentimental about. It was dated orange oak and living in their basement guest room. She also asked us to update the entire room including the decor, to better compliment their modern farmhouse style.

The furniture set was painted in a distressed black finish, and the decor was sourced on a budget from Target, Homegoods, Etsy, etc.

Although we haven’t yet opened up for decorating/design services, it was fun dipping our toes in and being able to bring this room to life!

A little sneak peek of this French Provincial beauty! 😍🌸

05/12/2020

It’s rare that I meet a client who can see the full potential in an ugly piece of furniture. Most people just can’t see past the dated worn exterior like I can. However, this particular client knew exactly what she wanted for her home and went out and found the perfectly sized and detailed cabinet for sale locally and had me transform it for her.

Now you tell me, would you be able to see past that dated and rather ugly exterior and actually go pay money and buy it from someone?! Didn’t think so. 🤣 But I’m SO glad she could see the potential because holy moly, I LOVE how this one turned out! 🎉

Another frenchie set in the books! This pair received a much needed makeover and will now reside in the nursery of a darling little girl who was just born a few weeks ago.

We updated these using one of our favorite creamy whites, Alabaster by General Finishes.

Guess who’s back! 🎉

I’ve only posted once in the last 2 months so I’ve got a LOT to catch you all up on! Although I haven’t been posting or sharing much on our current projects, we’ve been staying busy over here and getting as much done as we can throughout all this craziness.

This piece was a commissioned project for a client of local designer, Val Valdez of Revitalize Design. It’s a gorgeous solid wood Ethan Allen piece but no longer fit the new bright and colorful room design so we gave it an update!

We used General Finishes Persian Blue with an Antique White color wash / glaze to complement the new room furnishings and topped the look off with gorgeous glass k***s chosen by the customers from D. Lawless Hardware. Chic & Colorful at its best!

03/05/2020

Thanks for the share General Finishes!! Still one of my favorite sets we’ve ever done.
All those hand painted gold details were so pretty paired with navy and glass k***s! 😍😍

It's Throwback Thursday and we're throwing it back to some past faves in GF Burnished Pearl Effects.

"This stunning pair was given a full-on glamorous custom makeover with countless hours of precision brushstrokes perfecting all of that beautiful gold detail! Layers of silky smooth General Finishes Coastal Blue Milk Paint from NOVA Design and Build NOVA Design and Build provided the perfect canvas for the Burnished Pearl Effects we added for contrast and then topped with HPTC in Semi-Gloss for an extra bit of shine! The shimmering glass k***s from D. Lawless Hardware and luxe cream upholstery from G Street Fabrics were the perfect additions to tie everything all together!" - Twig & Thyme Design

Happy Delivery Day! 🚛💨 I’m happy to report that the sisters are now in their forever home and looking great!! 😍🙌🏼

When I met with my customer last year for a consultation on a different piece, she showed me her china cabinet (on the left) and said that she’d been looking for another like it but with feet to put on either side of her dining room. Ironically, I had just the right piece in my unfinished inventory! 🎉 To make ours even more similar to our customers, we removed the top arch, added new trim, removed the fretwork from the doors, and added vintage Hepplewhite pulls to better complement her cabinet.

The inspiration for the colors and finish came from a dresser my customer saw on Pinterest by Salvaged Inspirations . Luckily for myself, Denise had posted a video on YouTube showing the Dixie Belle Paint Company colors and technique she used so that others could recreate her look! Thanks Denise! We love how these turned out!

Another beautiful transformation in the books!

I know we’ve been pretty quiet over here recently, but I’ve been taking a bit of a social media break and focusing on getting all of the projects were working on completed. We are now back to back and booked until JULY! 😱 Did I just say that?! Wow.

Thank you all as always for you support and referrals! So much of our business each month is from word of mouth and friend to friend referrals and I feel so honored. ❤️

This Peacock 🦚 cutie was snatched up off of my Instagram stories before she was even finished! The best part is that she’s heading to live with my long time customer and friend who has 6 other gorgeous pieces that I’ve worked on for her. It will be one big happy family! 🎉😃

This piece was painted in Peacock by Paint Couture Paint Company and lightly distressed to show off her lines. I opted for wooden k***s to play off the distressing and because they’re the most pretty detailed wooden k***s I’ve ever had and I think they look great on her!

Well helloooo there! 😍🖤😍🖤

When it comes to furniture, I always tend to be drawn to more traditional styles. The claw feet, delicate legs, and beautiful veneer, always catch my eye!

This classic piece belongs to one of my clients who share the same love for traditional style furniture like this Duncan Phyfe game table. It was in well loved condition when we picked it up and was begging for a new look. We kept it classic with a regal black exterior with hand painted golden details. We knew we wanted to preserve some of the original wood grain and were able to refinish the interior of the table for a rich wood-toned contrast when the table is opened.

It’s not often I post a piece twice, but this cutie is giving me all the feels this Monday. She’s been hanging out in my kitchen this week so I get to see her all day everyday and I will say without a doubt, this is one of my favorites. She’s just so sweet and in the most beautiful COLOR!

It’s not often that I stage with multiple pieces I’ve painted, but this trio just works together!
These may look like small and easy pieces, but I will tell you, they were quite the challenge.

The bright and bold spindle table was once wobbly, very worn, and had the THICKEST brown painted finish I had ever seen on it. It was completely taken apart, stripped down, and then rebuilt before receiving its glorious makeover! My customer who isn’t afraid of color and chose Paint Couture Paint Company in Firelight 🔥 to brighten up her hallway where this piece now lives.

The petite vintage mirror received a modern update in our favorite multi-toned “Rustic Barley” finish.

The smallest yet most unique piece we worked on, was the tray table or “tea table”. It is made out of an antique wooden tray and sometime within the last decade had legs added to the base. If you know me, you know I love tea ☕️, and that I have my own tea tray set up at our house, so this piece was rather special for me to work on. It was painted in General Finishes Reverent Gray and Glazed in Paint Couture’s Van D**e Glaze Couture. AND we removed the nasty old felt from the tray bottom and added a little something special to surprise our customer! 🎉

Who we are!

Hi everyone and welcome to Twig & Thyme Design! My name is Courtney Cole and I am the owner and artist behind Twig & Thyme Design. We are a home-based business located in Northern Virginia about 30 minutes outside of Washington, DC. We specialize in Custom Furniture Painting offering our clients a personalized experience in updating their dated furniture into something they love and are proud to display in their home. We update not only our customers pieces but we also take special “wish list” requests and source furniture pieces specific to our customers needs.

I started this hobby of mine back in 2016 while pursuing my career in fashion. On my days off I would frequent our local antique shops and had built quite a collection of my own painted furniture and vintage finds. When I decided I needed a career change, I dove into something I already knew and loved and my business, Twig & Thyme Design, was born!

The early stages of my business were mainly focused on sourcing unique furniture pieces and painting them for sale. As time went on I began having more and more of my very first customers asking for me to paint their personal pieces. I quickly realized there was a great need for this service in our area and began focusing my efforts more on Custom Furniture Painting over furniture sales. We now proudly serve dozens of customers a year by transforming their dated but beloved furniture into “new” pieces they adore.

In 2018 my fiance and partner of 13 years, Mario, decided to pursue his passion for photography and started his own small photography business. He now is my personal in-house photographer and I’d say we make a great team! He also is the extra set of hands and muscles behind all of the moving, picking up, and delivering of furniture with me.
